Introduction
From what I have learned everyone has an opinion on how to train a cat to use the toilet. Something most people forget is they are not talking about all cats, but their cat. How do they know how Joshua will react when I move his litter box next to the toilet? Taking a little from here and a little from there, here's what I plan to do with Joshua.
The most important thing to remember is the process has to be accomplished in stages. You have to keep the step sizes small enough as not to completely disrupt your cat's lifestyle. If at any time your cat gives the whole thing up and pees on the floor (or your bed!), you're pushing him too far too fast; back up a stage or two and try again -- slower.
Syntax
In the following instructions, I've used the word REST to mean: do nothing for a period of between a day and a week, depending on how flappable your cat is.
The second most important thing to remember is: Lid Up, Seat Down. Post a note on the back of the door or the lid of the toilet if you think you (or your housemates or guests) might forget. And if you are accustomed to closing the bathroom door when it's empty, you'll have to break that habit too.
